The Little Zoo That Grew

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, also known as The Little Zoo That Could, has been one of the best small city zoos in America for years, popular for both its location, Gulf Shores, which is one of the most affordable beach towns in America, and because it offers animal encounters that cost less and last longer than most big-city alternatives. This year “The Little Zoo That Grew” will move into a spacious new 25-acre park, more than four miles north of the coastline. This new location will offer much more room and more protection since the animals will be out of storm surge danger. Recently named #2 on the list of The Coolest Things Opening Around The World in 2019*, it’s the first American zoo built fully from the ground up in over 20 years. It will center around a tranquil lake, crossed by zip-lines and walking paths, will offer paddle boats to get from exhibit to exhibit, boasts a giraffe observation tower where guests can hand-feed these gentle giants at eye level, and will run electric jeep safari rides where guests can cruise past some of the smaller animals. The zoo plans to have a strong emphasis on animal conservation through educational experiences, and the Sustainable Life Center will feature demonstrations, organic gardening, rainwater harvestings and other sustainable techniques for conserving the environment. As of right now, the new zoo has a projected opening date of mid November. * For a little perspective, #1 on the list is a 1500 ft observation tower over Bangkok, which is the 6th largest tower in the world, and 3rd on the list is Disneyland’s new Star Wars-themed land in California.
