The pandemic has completely changed the travel industry, and we’ve been watching to see how it will unfold. As borders opened, restrictions loosened, and vaccinations became more widespread, many felt armed and ready to explore again. Although a slow trickle back into vacationing was predicted, a different trend has risen: revenge travel. This phenomenon is the first of its kind.

You may be thinking: Revenge from who, how, or what? After over a year of confinement, severe restrictions, and pent-up wanderlust, people were finally able to begin traveling and did so with a vengeance. This new travel surge was coined “revenge travel” referring to the idea that people returned to vacationing not only in large numbers but also with an agenda. Many people had been forced to cancel, abandon, or drastically change their previous travel plans, which resulted in some need for retribution. People were ready to take back their freedom and their vacations.

This was particularly good news for vacation rentals. 2021 was an unprecedented year in the travel industry. The average booking lead times, occupancy rates, and average daily rates all saw an upswing. There were a number of factors that contributed to this, such as policy flexibility and the fact that vacation rentals are better equipped for longer stays, which benefit remote workers. Experts predict a continuation of this positive trend, although there is uncertainty as to how long it will continue.

Some folks are still quite skeptical about pandemic travel, while others are unleashing their restlessness. Four main groups of revenge travelers have emerged.

Millennials: This group of tourists should come as no surprise. Pioneering the path for vacation rental trends, millennials are at the forefront of revenge travel. At the prime of their lives and with a year of savings in their pockets, young people are hitting the roads like crazy.

Domestic Travelers: The travel frenzy is spreading, but not everyone is so inclined to jump back into international trips yet. There will still be a large number of people ready to explore, but only within the comforts of their home country.

Luxury Travelers: A year of confinement forced everyone to stay at home, cutting out additional expenses completely. Without restaurants, bars, spas, or recreational activities, many people were able to put away an ample amount of money and they’re ready to treat themselves.

US Travelers: U.S. travelers have historically been jet setters, but European travel bans made some of their top destinations completely off-limits. With all eyes on US tourists, many countries could revisit their restrictions in anticipation of a summer filled with nonessential travel.

Life has changed dramatically. People have been yearning for a sense of normality, and they believe a getaway will provide this. They want to travel again. The demand is there. Vaccinations, eased restrictions, and antsy guests create the perfect environment for another season of revenge travel.
