Gulf Shores International Airport: A Game Changer for Alabama’s Beaches

When commercial air service officially began at Gulf Shores International Airport at Jack Edwards Field in May 2025, it marked a historic moment for Alabama’s beaches. For the first time, visitors could fly directly into Gulf Shores instead of driving from regional airports.
Less than a year later, the results have been impressive, and the airport is already becoming a powerful new gateway for visitors to our area.
A Strong Start
The new commercial service launched with flights operated by Allegiant Air, a carrier known for connecting mid-sized cities directly to popular leisure destinations. The response from travelers was immediate. In 2025 alone, more than 80,000 passengers traveled through the airport, far exceeding early expectations. Nearly half of those travelers were first-time visitors to Alabama’s beaches, introducing an entirely new segment of guests to the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area. That is a particularly important statistic showing that air access does not simply make travel easier; it expands the geographic reach of our destination and allows visitors from farther markets to consider Alabama’s beaches for their vacation.
Expanding Flight Options
The airport’s growth continues into 2026, with additional routes. Beginning in May 2026, Allegiant is adding five new nonstop destinations, including:
Springfield, Missouri
Louisville, Kentucky
Huntsville, Alabama
Omaha, Nebraska
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
These seasonal flights will operate several times per week during peak travel periods.
With these additions, the airport will offer 13 nonstop destinations and approximately 30 flights per week during the peak season, creating significantly more accessibility to Alabama’s beaches for travelers across the Midwest and central United States.
Many of these markets historically required long driving distances to reach the coast. Direct flights dramatically shorten travel time and make weekend or short-stay trips far more practical.
A Growing Impact on Tourism
The airport's early success highlights something tourism leaders have long believed: easier access leads to increased visitation. Air travelers often represent a different type of guest than traditional drive-in visitors. They frequently stay longer, travel during shoulder seasons, and are more likely to return once they discover the destination. This expansion of travel access helps diversify our visitor base and can contribute to stronger long-term demand.
Expansion Already Underway
The airport’s success has already prompted plans for further improvements. With passenger traffic growing rapidly, local leaders are planning a terminal expansion to accommodate additional travelers and improve the gate area. These upgrades will allow the airport to handle more passengers comfortably and position it for continued growth as airlines evaluate additional routes in the future.
The success of Gulf Shores International Airport is an encouraging sign. Direct flights make the destination more accessible, expand the geographic markets that can easily reach our beaches, and introduce thousands of new travelers to the area each year. As flight routes continue to grow and the airport expands its facilities, this new infrastructure will likely become an increasingly important driver of tourism demand.
